Art Event II

The second art event I went to was the SMCM Senior Art SMP in Progress show at the gallery and art annex. This show featured art form all the senior SMP students. Their works seemed to be a bit more focused and had a general idea of what their SMP was about. Most of the works in the gallery of the conventional painting, drawing, sculpting, etc. form. Also the ones in the gallery were the smaller ones that could actually fit in the gallery. There were many insulations and video works in the annex. Both were really cool.

There was so much work to see all at once and in such a short time. Reading a few of the artist statements and looking at the work they seemed to be on a good track and are getting across what they wanted.  For example Chuck had a large interactive sculpture about the toll or tax if you will that every citizen has. Kind of like a civic duty. Having this large real life tool booth really made you literally feel what your duty was. There was the duty of the toll but the question on the inside was what does society need and that at the time is just a question that you answer as you go throw the art work but later take with you and becomes your civic duty. On the other hand there is the easy way out were you just walk around it. Another example of work was Shannon’s pieces done in a wide range of materials. I did not really get what she was after but from an outside point of view I first of really liked them. I could see what she meant but starting with no end image in mind. It did in a way look like any other abstract of that nature but had something about it that when you look at it for a second you get a feeling or mood. I think this is what she may have been going for or at least ended up with. The different colors some heavy and some light all playing with emptiness of the canvas exposed. It has like music that played with silence. In a way had a harmonious yet exited feel. Very cool. And all the others were just as good.

I think the show was a huge success and everyone really enjoyed it. I think all the work was really really good. Just talking to a few I found that everyone got loads of feedback and grand ideas were already rolling for their final. It seemed that everyone knew how their work went and what to do to make it better.
